» Gateway (aka CGI or Common Gateway Interface)
Although the term "gateway" is used in many different areas of the English language, it is commonly used online as in "cgi" (common gateway interface). In simple terms, a gateway can be any configuration of hardware and/or software that acts as a translator or access device between two different protocols on the Internet - or even a system setup that enables access to the Internet or to a private network. Gateway is just a general term to indicate that there is an interface structure or program involved with the communication of two different entities.
