» Java
Java is a popular, flexible network oriented programming language from Sun Microsystems. It is specifically designed for the development of programs that can be safely downloaded onto your computer from the Internet without fear or worry of infection or spyware. Applets (the common name for small java programs) are used heavily around the internet for bring animations, calculators and other bells & whistles to webpages (if you've ever played online at Pogo.com, you've used a java applet!). JavaScript and Java are two different programming languages.
» Javascript & JScript
Not to be confused with Java (a programming language from Sun Microsystems), Javascript (originally known as "LiveScript") is another highly capable programming language for use on the Internet. Developed by Netscape Communications, Javascript as it is now known brings interactive website features to us every day. Javascript can be part of any website in part because it is much less complicated to write than original Java. Microsoft features their own version of Javascript called JScript. Although Javascript (and JScript) can really bring some snazzy effects and interactive services to a website, there are sometimes errors in executing the scripts from platform to platform and a buggy webpage (or more than one) than can really wreack havoc on an otherwise well built site in the search engine results. If you aren't sure about how to implement Javascript on your website, check our "see also" resources below.
